The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
